20, October 2014: Have you ever been in a situation where you have to lie about your age? There are plenty of reasons why most people do, such as vanity, pride, insecurity and some for getting a job since most companies today require a certain age limit to qualify. Most people have to lie about their age because they think that they have to, since our culture sets our mind that young is good and old isn’t so much. But to Anna Stoehr, the reason behind her lie is simpler — all she wants is to join Facebook. In the social media universe, it is a fact that most people lie about their age for several reasons, but Stoehr has to lie about her age because the social media site has its own certain age limits.
Obsolete?
Anna Stoehr recently celebrated her 114th birthday. She tried to create her own Facebook account only to realize that the social media site only features as far as 1905. Unfortunately, the centenarian woman was born in 1900 long before the telephone lines where created and airplanes were not yet fully developed. She holds the title of the oldest resident in Minnesota and perhaps the oldest person who has a social media account.
Tech Buddies
She decided to become a tech-enthusiast when she met Joseph Ramireza, a Verizon Salesperson. Stoehr’s 87 year-old son bought an iPhone from Remireza; afterwards Ramireza found out that his client still has a mother. Ever since then, the centenarian woman and the salesperson from Verizon developed their friendship.
It is never too old to make new friends and to learn new things. It is amazing that an old woman from Minnesota proves it. Ramireza taught her how to search on Google, how to use Facetime (an application for Mac users where you can make video calls over Wi-fi), and use Facebook.
She’s taking over
She is not only a techie senior American citizen, in fact she overthrew an 85 year old techie Rex Redstone who holds the title of oldest Instagram user in United Kingdom. For now it is believed that she has dethroned the young fellow and replaced Edythe Kirchmaier the world’s oldest Facebook user. She is a living proof that age is just numbers and it is never too late to learn something new.
By the way, Stoehr penned a letter to Mark Zuckeberg, the creator of Facebook, letting him know that “I’m still here”.
