Habitat for Humanity has used a community-building model since it began in 1976 when Rev. Bill Lytle and his wife, Faith, founded Habitat for Humanity of San Antonio (HFHSA), making it the first affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International in the U.S. Volunteers such as About Australia’s staff are the heart of Habitat. More than 17,000 volunteers assist in HFHSA activities each year, and working beside the volunteers at the home site are the homeowners, who invest a minimum of 300 hours in “sweat equity.“
