The Caribbean Regatta, comprising several events around the islands over the next two months, could be a spring highlight for Essential Hotel Collection guests and anyone else planning a visit to the region.
The regatta, one of the main focal points of the competitive sailing calendar, actually kicked off this January, with no less than four events: the Mount Gay Rum Round Barbados Race Series; the Superyacht Challenge, in Antigua; the Island Water World Grenada Sailing Week; and the San Juan International Regatta. Fans of sailing and yachting should not, however, be discouraged, as the season still holds plenty of events that could justify a booking in one of the Essential Hotel Collection hotels this February or March.
One such event is the Budget Marine Interlux Open Regatta, raced in Simpson Bay Lagoon in identical twenty-inch mini-yachts. This race’s main point of interest is the even chance it gives all its competitors. By providing them with identical boats, organizers of this event hope skill, rather than budget or technological advancements, is at the core of a victory.
The RC44 Virgin Gorda Cup, the first Caribbean stop for the RC44 Championship Tour, is another highlight for sailing enthusiasts, as is the Jolly Harbour Valentine’s Regatta and Rum festival, which combines two of the Caribbean people’s favourite activities, sailing and drinking. The double bill at St Marteens — with the Multihull Regatta and the Heineken Regatta — also promises to attract its share of followers.
However, the biggest sailing event taking place in this three-month stretch is undoubtedly the RORC Caribbean 600, a 600-mile race around 14 of the islands in the Caribbean Sea. This year’s edition already has upwards of 50 entrants, and promises to once again be a highlight of the regatta year. Further on, the BVI Spring Regatta & Sailing Festival is another landmark to look out for for sailing enthusiasts.
The Caribbean is amongst the world’s prime destinations for regattas and sailing events, hosting them not only in the spring but also all year round.
