Australian newspaper the Herald Sun recently published a feature on their website highlighting all the best sights to see when on holidays to Sicily.
The newspaper’s list was rather comprehensive, encompassing churches, volcanoes and island-hopping, so as to appeal to every type of holidaymaker. The common denominator between all of these attractions was the fact that they were located a stone’s throw from Sicily’s main urban centres, and therefore easily accessible to interested parties.
Each attraction listed in the article was also categorised in terms of what its main source of appeal was. In this way, readers planning potential holidays to Sicily could quickly scan the list and discover which of the spots listed would be most relevant to their interests, and plan their holiday from there.
Palermo, for instance, was deemed particularly interesting to foodies. Even though this well-known Sicilian town possesses plenty of other attractions in its own right, the list highlighted it mainly because of its excellent local delicacies. These can be enjoyed either at one of the plentiful trattorias scattered throughout the city or, alternatively, in one of the food stalls at one of the city’s frequently held markets.
The Aeolian Islands were another attraction on the list, and one recommended for lovers of variety. This archipelago is comprised of seven islands, and each of them offers a distinctive source of charm and interest, from green, leafy landscapes to quaint cobblestoned towns. This diversity will ensure no visitor to the islands is left bored, and that the archipelago offers something for all tastes.
Another attraction not to be missed, according to the Sun Herald, is the Mount Etna volcano, which will certainly delight fans of this type of sight. The active crater is easily accessible from most points on the island and is a must-visit for foreigners on holidays to Sicily.
The list is rounded out by Scicli, where plenty of Baroque monuments await history enthusiasts, and Taormina, a glamorous seaside resort sure to delight fans of more traditional, luxurious fly-and-flop holidays.
The Herald Sun’s list is complete with suggestions of the best places to stay or eat at for each of the locations on offer.
