Stevensville; 04 June, 2014: The location of the building that caught fire was on the east side of Highway 93 and north of the Stevi Cutoff Road. The building was destroyed via fire on Saturday.
Will Malone, who was in the vicinity at the time of the blaze said that when he arrived at the scene just as the emergency responders arrived as well. When emergency vehicles arrived at the scene, the majority of the storage garage was engulfed in flames. The emergency vehicles were from the Bitterroot Valley firefighters, Stevensville Fire Department, Florence Fire Department and Victor Fire Department. An estimated 30 fire fighters were at the scene. So much damage was done that the south side of the building collapsed, Malone said.
Malone had no idea what the building was although he saw antique cars inside the building. Locals told Malone that the building was indeed a private storage garage. The value of the antique vehicles is unknown.
No casualties during the fire
Stevensville Rural Fire Chief Rex Olson was also on the scene. He said that the building burned to the within an hour. Fire fighters responded to the call just before 1:30 p.m. Olson said that no one was using the building at the time of the fire. Olson stated that some of the materials inside the building helped the fire burn faster than normal. Flames spread to a camper behind the building which completely destroyed it.
The location of the private storage facility is between Les Schwab Tire Center and the Wildwood Brewery. An employee named Hayley Price told reporters that by 2:30 p.m. the fire was under control and almost entirely extinguished. Several of the fire trucks stayed at the location of the blaze until the fire was completely out.
Price confirmed that the building was a private storage facility and that the owner was a man who lived nearby. Olson stated that the cause of the fire is still under investigation and that they don’t have an estimation on the price of the damage, but confirmed that everything inside and in the vicinity of the building was completely destroyed.
Olson added that the sheriff’s deputies at the scene responded to a car crash on the nearby road. The crash was a result of passersby trying to slow down and watch the flames. Once the sheriff’s deputies arrived at the crash it was determined that no one was injured in the car crash.
