09 July, 2014: A bridal gown fashion show held in New York, which focused on dresses made out of toilet paper, could constitute a quirky and unusual source of inspiration for wedding dress designers in London, as well as the USA.
The aptly named Toilet Paper Wedding Dress contest, which celebrated its 10th anniversary this year, is organised by a local website dedicated to helping brides and grooms-to-be plan an affordable, yet still stylish wedding. In this same spirit, the competition encourages brides and bridal designers alike to fashion gowns and accessories out of nothing but toilet roll, glue, tape and thread.
Unsurprisingly, this call for bridal designers’ imaginations yielded encouraging results, some of which surprised even the judges in attendance. From long creations with traditional trains to shorter and more modern designs, participants in the contest showed precisely how many ways there are to turn a toilet roll into a wedding gown with just a little bit of imagination and craftiness — an attitude wedding dress designers in London and elsewhere in the world will certainly identify with and appreciate!
The winner of this contest, a 28-year-old bride from Ohio, presented an ornate full-length wedding gown, the creation of which is said to have involved upwards of twenty rolls of toilet paper. The creativity and scope of the project sufficiently impressed the judges — among which was a former Project Runway judge — that Susan Brenner was able to return to her native Ohio with the first prize of $10.000 (approximately £6000). Brenner, a professional cheerleader for the Detroit Pistons and owner of an online clothing boutique, later revealed that her creation had entailed more than a month’s work.
The 10th annual Toilet Paper Wedding Dress contest was held on the rooftop balcony of the upscale Sanctuary Hotel, in Manhattan, and sponsored by a local brand of toilet roll, which provided the materials for the designers and brides to create their dresses out of.
