22, September 2014: Domestic violence, athletes, and anger management. This is an explosive combination, says Todd Stofka Peak Performance Expert at Philly Hypnosis Performance. The news has been riddled with top professional athletes from the NFL, MLB, and NBA committing acts of domestic violence on their spouses and children.
What is the common denominator with NFL Players Ray Rice, Baltimore Raven Jonathan Dwyer, Arizona Cardinals Ray McDonald and Chris Cook of the San Francisco 49ers, Tony McDaniel and Kevin Williams of the Seattle Seahawks, Brandon Marshall and Santonio Holmes of the Chicago Bears, Greg Hardy of the Carolina Panthers, Dez Bryant of the Dallas Cowboys, Erik Walden of the Indianapolis Colts, Donte Whitner of the Cleveland Browns, Randy Starks of the Miami Dolphins and Frostee Rucker of the Arizona Cardinals? They all have been arrested for domestic violence or related charges since 2005. Anger management is it at the center.
Stofka says we pay millions of dollars for action sports entertainment and we expect big results. Part of their training includes aggressive behavior state of mind toward the opposition. Injuries from violence are expected during any given game. The system fails when it does not include teaching athletes how to turn down or turn off that state of mind when they are not on the field, court, on the ice or in the ring.
One of the ways Stofka and his team have worked with athletes is to help them create a switch. Using the science of sports hypnosis and neural linguistic psychology an athlete can learn to switch off their aggressive, angry, barbarian performance or similar for the sport when they step off the field.
If these strong aggressive performers do not turn off the switch, then the same aggression used in their sport is easily turned on spouses, significant others, family members and friends. With the difference in size and strength, one aggressive movement can cause immense physical and emotional harm.
