28, October 2014: Those booked in to one of the many excellent Sicilian rentals can take part in the fabulous Festival of St Martin, due to take place on the 11th of November this year. This traditional festival has been deemed by travel experts as the perfect opportunity to sample Sicily’s finest culinary offerings, prior to the locals’ traditional 40 day fast in the run up to Christmas — although visitors are assured it’s not compulsory to follow through with that!
The festival is held in honour of the great Roman soldier and religious missionary, St Martin of Tours and, based on previous years, Italian tourism authorities are expecting an influx of visitors to book accommodation in Sicilian rentals in anticipation of this major event.
Sicily’s expert wine makers will present a selection of Marsala, Moscato, Malvasia and Passito for the festival, which will be served with different types of biscotti. Visitors with a passion for Italian cuisine can also get excited about the prospect of sampling sweet granita e brioche and crumbly cannoli during the feast of St Martins. A variety of talented local and international musicians will perform to mark the special occasion.
Youngsters staying in any of the Sicilian rentals will also have the opportunity to partake in a range of activities during the festival. They can join local children in workshops to make paper lanterns for the evening procession and attend choral performances at venues such as the famous Cefalu Cathedral.
In fact, there is traditionally a range of celebrations to honour St Martin in countries such as Belgium, Germany and Portugal, but the Sicilian celebrations are arguably the best. Many Italians and foreigners visit the island in the week leading up to the festival to soak up the atmosphere and take part in the festivities, so those planning on booking Sicilian rentals for the event are advised to make plans early.
