20, January 2015: While travel experts agree the ski season is well and truly underway in the Three Valleys ski resorts, there are plenty of other things for visitors to see and do throughout January and February, making it an excellent time to go skiing in the Alps. With visitor numbers swelling, 2015 is off to a great start.
Events in the Alps
The SFR Freestyle Tour 2015 will be a big event this year, according to locals and travel industry experts. Europe’s biggest freestyle competition features four events, and it will be held in Val Thorens, Vars and La Clusaz before arriving in Tignes from March 8th to 13th. This last stage in Tignes will be an open competition for both professionals and amateurs.
Representatives from top accommodation company Ski Amis say that the BMW Masters Polo Competition is another of the high profile events anyone going skiing in the Alps can look forward to. Held in Courchevel from January 30th to February 2nd, this exciting three-day event will feature matches between international teams as well as plenty of entertainment. Held at 2,700 metres, this is the highest tournament of its kind in the world, and features horses specially trained on snow. Visitors can expect a glamorous and thrilling event if pat years are anything to go by.
Unfortunately, wine lovers have just missed a celebration of French wine in the Alps, as Les Menuires celebrated its annual wine celebration for the 15th year in a row, from January 3rd to 9th. Including lots of wine tastings the event was held in the sports centre, with winegrowers coming from all over France, including Champagne, Burgundy and Bordeaux. Although too late for this year, it’s never too early to start thinking about next year’s event!
Anybody planning a holiday skiing in the Alps should also look out for the festivities scheduled for the 50th Anniversary of Les Menuires. The main party will take place on February 12th but there are plenty of smaller events scattered throughout the year.
For those planning a holiday skiing in the Alps, experts from Ski Amis say it is advisable to book as early as possible in order to secure accommodation in the resort you want.
