14, February 2015: As one of the most popular European destinations for barge cruises along the many miles of canals running through the heart of the country, France welcomes record numbers of visitors every year. Representatives from top barge holiday operator European Waterways, which organises luxury canal cruises in Europe and the UK, say that the exciting events scheduled for 2015 in Paris will be an extra incentive for their clients.
While travel experts say many people do not necessarily think of Paris when considering a canal cruise in France – focusing instead on regions like Burgundy and the Loire Valley — in fact, the city is an excellent location, with many itineraries from companies like European Waterways including it. They say the major events taking place in Paris in 2015 make it an even more desirable destination.
The Paris Event Calendar
The first major event is the Marathon de Paris (Paris Marathon). This year will see the 39th marathon take place on Sunday April 12. This fantastic international event is just as fun to watch as it is to take part. The famous race will start in the morning on Avenue des Champs-Elysées at 8:45, and comes to an end on Avenue Foch.
The French Open is one of the four Grand Slam tennis tournaments of the year, and it is always an exciting time to be in the French capital. In 2015, the tournament will be held from May 24 to June 7 at Roland Garros Stadium.
The Fête de la Musique (Musical Fair) will be held on June 21, and visitors to Paris will be able to take their choice from numerous concerts throughout the city and in the rest of the country. Top spots in Paris include Sainte-Chapelle and the Palais de Justice and, like everywhere else throughout the festival, the concerts will be free.
Bastille Day is a national holiday everywhere in the country. It takes place on July 14, and travel experts say Paris is the very best place to enjoy the festivities. There will be music, fireworks and more. The biggest party is to be held at the Eiffel Tower, with parades taking place along the Champs-Élysées.
For those booking on to a barge cruise with companies like European Waterways, any of these events may offer the opportunity to experience the festivities before they embark on their holiday, or even as part of it.
