Orlando, FL — April 20, 2015 — Osteoporosis is often caused by damage to the cartilage, which is the tissue that cushions the joints. Patients who suffer from the symptoms of osteoporosis are often unable to go about their daily routines. However, there is optimism that a drug already approved by the FDA may help prevent or treat cartilage damage.
A drug for bone loss may be a potential treatment for cartilage health. Animal testing was conducted and it was found that the drug teriparatide (Forteo) could potentially help to not just stop cartilage loss, but also reverse it. Teriparatide is believed to be effective in helping prevent and reverse cartilage damage that leads to osteoarthritis. This is something that many people who are suffering from or prone to osteoarthritis will be glad to hear.
“It is expected that by 2020, osteoarthritis will affect 50 million individuals in the United States alone. However, there currently isn’t any drug that is used to treat cartilage damage in osteoarthritis. Only steroids and anti-inflammatory drugs are used, and that’s to reduce pain,” explained VitaBreeze Supplements spokesperson, Michelle O’Sullivan.
The Arthritis Foundation has stated on its website that when the cartilage gets damaged and deteriorates, it can result in joint pain and inflammation. Parathyroid hormone, which is marketed as the FDA-approved prescription drug teriparatide (Forteo), is formulated to heal bone, but is also known for its possible effects on cartilage cells.
Researchers at the University of Rochester Medical Center in New York found that teriparatide could potentially prevent cartilage loss and damage due to osteoarthritis after a joint injury in mice. They also stated that the drug may possibly regenerate cartilage.
The scientists conducted the study using random groups of mice, all suffering from ligament and cartilage injuries. One group was given teriparatide for about 12 weeks. Another group was given the drug starting eight weeks after the injury. A third group was the control group.
Researchers found out that the group that received 12 weeks of treatment had 27 percent more joint cartilage compared to the control group. The group that received delayed treatment experienced 35 percent more cartilage. According to doctors, the drug could be effective in regenerating lost cartilage.
Forteo is an injectable drug that is considered to be better than surgery. Studies still continue to focus on the effects that the drug has on the cartilage, as well as the proper dosage for humans. Many arthritis patients also use glucosamine supplements, as these natural alternatives are believed to be effective in providing pain relief and improving cartilage health (http://www.amazon.com/Glucosamine-Sulfate-Chondroitin-Supplement-Turmeric/dp/B00DUMO9X4).
