09, May 2015: Opening in May and running for six months through to the end of October, the Expo Milano 2015 is a universal exhibition where over 140 participating countries will present the very best technology to the rest of the world. In this case, however, there is an underlying message quite apart from the important role technology plays in our modern lives. The technology showcased must “offer a concrete answer to a vital need: being able to guarantee healthy, safe and sufficient food for everyone, while respecting the Planet and its equilibrium.”
Expo Milano
Expo Milano expects around 20 million visitors to come through the doors over the six-month period, with events and exhibitions scheduled over its 1.1 million square metres of space. With many of those attending expected to be independent travellers and students, a spokesperson from Hostelling International, the only global network of youth hostels, say they’re anticipating a busy time in their Milan hostels for the duration of Expo Milano. The safety, affordability and social nature of the Hostelling International hostel accommodation encourages travellers to stay longer and immerse more fully in a destination — and, in the case of the expo, will allow them to explore the full scope of the events and exhibits without pressure.
An Exchange of Ideas
Organisers of Expo Milano say their aim is to create an exchange of ideas and shared solutions around the theme of “Feeding the Planet, Energy for Life.” Promoting innovative technology and utilising global creativity in both agri-food and traditional gastronomy, Expo Milano brings together a host of countries all working towards the same aim: a sustainable future for the planet. An official statement from Expo Milano explains: “About 1.3 billion tons of foods are wasted every year. For these reasons, we need to make conscious political choices, develop sustainable lifestyles, and use the best technology to create a balance between the availability and the consumption of resources.”
Running from May 1st through until October 31st, Expo Milano is taking place both within the official exhibition site and around the city. For information on the excellent range of hostel accommodation in Milan, visit the Hostelling International website.
