Orlando, FL — May 12, 2015 — For individuals who suffer from diabetes, life can be really challenging. Medications are needed and they also have to adhere to a suitable and healthy diet. However, it seems that there are other things that diabetics need to do to protect themselves from comorbidities.
Research showed that individuals with Type 2 diabetes are more susceptible to osteoarthritis. According to researchers, osteoarthritis is not a mere “wear and tear” disease. There are two well-recognized risk factors for arthritis development and they are age and body mass index.
Diabetes Care recently published a study online that found Type 2 diabetes makes patients twice as susceptible to developing osteoarthritis. What makes this even more alarming is that this type of osteoarthritis is severe and requires joint replacement.
George Schett, M.D., study co-author and chief of rheumatology at the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg, believes that the data demonstrated how body mass, age and diabetes became strong and independent risk factors for joint failure.
According to George King, M.D., professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School and research director of the Joslin Diabetes Center in Boston, the study established the theory that osteoarthritis could be a component of diabetes complications. He also added that musculoskeletal problems, such as arthritis, often develop in diabetics.
“There were many theories about how diabetes could possibly increase osteoarthritis risk. Authors of the study have varying opinions, but they agree on the involvement of high blood sugar levels,” said VitaBreeze Supplements spokesperson, Michelle O’Sullivan.
Authors suggest the possibility of high blood sugar levels being responsible for promoting the destruction of collagen, which is one of the main components of cartilage. They also added that high blood sugar levels could stimulate the release of inflammatory substances that significantly damage the joints.
According to Dr. Schett, the study suggested that osteoarthritis could be one of the metabolic syndrome manifestations. Metabolic syndrome pertains to a group of risk factors (such as high cholesterol, obesity and high blood pressure) that increase a person’s risk of developing strokes, Type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease. He added that patients should manage their metabolic syndrome, as doing so can help prevent the development of symptomatic joint disease.
Arthritic conditions are difficult to deal with and manage. This is why many individuals are resorting to a wide variety of treatment options such as natural alternatives. Curcumin supplements are one of the most popular alternatives used by arthritis sufferers today (www.amazon.com/Turmeric-Curcumin-Complex-BioPerine-Bio-availability/product-reviews/B00JA4TLTI/).
