Camarillo, California; 01, June 2015: Thanks to Regenerative Medicine Specialists of Ventura County, local patients with ischial tuberosity pain — commonly called runner’s butt — can now enjoy same-day, in-office treatment for the condition even where more conservative options have failed.

Ischial tuberosity bursitis pain represents an uncomfortable, awkward condition suffered by many active individuals as well as those who spend a long time sitting down. It is often misdiagnosed and considered very difficult to treat. Now a new form of treatment using stem cells and/or PRP therapy is available to patients in the area, which may be able to help cases whose solution has eluded modern medicine.

Ischial tuberosity pain happens when a fluid-filled sac which is located between a bony projection called the ischial tuberosity and the hamstring develops inflammation. The ischial tuberosities normally support the body’s weight when one sits down, and the local muscles and fat in combination with the fluid-filled bursae help distribute the weight and prevent pain.

When the bursae become inflamed, sitting down means the full weight of the body is resting on the inflamed region. As a result patients experience considerable pain and discomfort.

Ischial bursitis originally appeared in tailors, who gave the condition “tailor’s bottom.” They sat for long hours on hard benches or stools, making a constant back and forth rocking motion. Today people who are very slim and spend their days in a hard chair at the computer sometimes develop similar problems, but more commonly it appears as a result of sports injuries that involve a hamstring strain or a form of tendonitis. Thus the name “runner’s butt.”

Any injury that results in a hamstring strain may produce an ischial bursitis in addition to the strain. Sometimes referred to as pulled hamstrings, a hamstring strain occurs when the hamstring fibers (or the tendons) tear due to overstretching. In some cases a hamstring strain is merely painful, but in others (especially if the hamstring tears completely) it can mean a complete loss of mobility. (Hamstring strains are very easy for patients to identify — they appear as extremely severe and sudden pains accompanied by a “pop” sound emanating from the hamstring region, and followed by the rear part of the thigh becoming tender, bruised, and swollen.)

Ischial bursitis may however appear even if the hamstring is not injured.

No matter whether a hamstring injury is involved or not, an ischial bursitis tends to be characterized by pain in the lower buttocks when the patient sits down or goes running. They may also experience tingling or numbness in the lower part of the leg or when they flex their knees.

Normally doctors try to treat an ischial bursitis using conservative methods, like rest and ice. However this is not necessarily effective. Up until now doctors have usually resorted to surgery, steroids, or NSAIDs to treat these cases.

Fortunately, for some patients these extreme measures may not be necessary. Using platelet rich plasma therapy and/or stem cell treatment, the doctors at Regenerative Medicine Specialists may be able to effectively treat ischial bursitis in just a single visit to their office. No hospital stay is required. The reason is that these therapies greatly enhance the body’s own ability to heal itself, using special healing cells which currently exist in the patient’s body and simply bringing them to the injured area.
