Orlando, FL— October 7, 2015 — Procedures such as a joint replacement surgery are often resorted to by individuals who suffer from arthritic conditions. While the surgery is helpful, there are undesirable consequences carried along in having it.
Research finds the possibility of weight gain after a joint replacement surgery. This procedure is an ideal option for individuals who are seeking for arthritis pain relief. Pain hinders sufferers from doing their daily routines and even working. Having arthritis has left many sufferers jobless, and with financial embarrassment.
“The procedure is very popular among arthritis sufferers, but it also has a drawback,” said VitaBreeze Supplements spokesperson, Michelle O’Sullivan.
According to the researchers from the University of Delaware, there is a chance that the surgery can cause weight gain in individuals. They conducted a study involving more than 100 people who had knee replacement surgery. They were monitored for two years, and it was found that most of the participants gained weight of an average of 14 more pounds than those who did not undergo surgery.
Joseph Zeni, Jr., PhD, a physical therapist and research assistant professor at the University of Delaware, is surprised by the idea of weight gain after surgery. It is almost always that individuals who underwent surgery stop experiencing pain, and they regain the physical ability to exercise and lose weight.
However, in a study involving 106 adults with severe knee osteoarthritis and 31 others without knee pain, it was found that two-thirds of those who underwent surgery gained weight while those in the control group did not experience any change in their weight. There was also a study in 2006 that found people who underwent the procedure gained an average of 10 pounds. The participants were neither overweight nor obese before having their joints replaced. Those who were already obese even before the procedure gained 14 pounds on average within three years.
Experts believe that gaining weight is particularly dangerous for individuals who had the procedure, mainly because having a higher body mass makes them more susceptible to loosening of joint components. Loosening of the joints can require a revision surgery.
The good news is that people, especially those who suffer from arthritis, are getting wiser about choosing the best remedy for them. Many are turning to natural alternatives such as glucosamine instead of using pain relief drugs or resorting to procedures. Glucosamine is widely believed to be a safer and effective alternative to individuals who want to improve their overall condition, and experience a reduction in arthritis pain (www.amazon.com/Glucosamine-Sulfate-Chondroitin-Supplement-Turmeric/dp/B00DUMO9X4/).
