Orlando, FL — October 13, 2015 — Disability is a negatively life-changing situation, and thousands of people from around the world are living a reduced quality of life because of it. There are several ways to reduce the risk of disability, and one is to learn about its risk factors.
Research reveals that obese older women who are suffering from arthritis are more susceptible to disability. Aging, being obese, and having arthritis are excellent ingredients of disability.
Aging causes reduced glucosamine production inside the body. Glucosamine is a naturally occurring substance in the body that is believed to help maintain joint health. Reduced levels of glucosamine in the body are believed to put people at risk of an arthritic condition called osteoarthritis.
Arthritis, on the other hand, causes pain and inflammation, which forces sufferers to be subject to physical limitations. Weight gain and obesity are the most common consequences of immobility, or not being able to move and become physically active.
According to Heather E. Whitson, M.D., author of the study and assistant professor of medicine at Duke University Medical Center, middle-aged women at the perimenopausal stage are more likely to gain extra weight, which has been associated with the increased prevalence of disability in old age.
The Journal of Gerontology: Medical Sciences published a study that aimed at evaluating the rates of disability of 5,888 women and men older than 65. In the study, disability was defined as a state where one needs assistance from others when doing basic routines such as getting dressed, bathing, or simply getting out of bed.
The study reveals that 83 percent of the female participants were more likely to suffer from disability than men. The researchers believe that the increased risk was due to the prevalence of arthritis. Obesity is also believed to be a risk factor for arthritis.
The study also revealed that women were four times more at risk for morbid obesity. Women who experience not just arthritis, but also coronary artery disease, congestive heart failure, stroke, or hearing problems are also believed to be more at risk for disability than men who suffer from the same condition.
The good news is that there are measures women can take to reduce their risk of arthritis, obesity, and disability. It is imperative that they practice a healthy diet and lifestyle such as consuming plant-based foods and regularly exercising.
There are also natural remedies that are believed to be highly therapeutic, like curcumin supplements. Curcumin is a healing ingredient found in the medicinal spice turmeric. It has anti-inflammatory properties, which are thought to fight pain and inflammation caused by arthritis (www.amazon.com/Turmeric-Curcumin-BioPerine-Pepper-Extract/dp/B00VSVKJ8I).
