Orlando, FL— February 02, 2016 — Among the alcoholic beverages, wine is considered to be one of the healthiest. Unlike beer and other types of alcoholic drinks, wine is believed to offer various health benefits. Unfortunately, there are certain disadvantages of drinking the beverage that have not been known to many people.
Research investigates the link between wine consumption and gout attacks. Gout risk has long been associated with drinking beer and hard liquor. However, wine drinkers may also think twice about consuming the beverage.
This inflammatory form of arthritis develops when uric acid builds up around the ankles, knees, elbows, feet, and wrists. Gout results in episodes of pain, swelling, and intense redness, and this for sufferers are extremely troublesome.
The American Journal of Medicine reveals that wine consumption can potentially trigger gout attacks. There are around 8 million individuals in the United States who suffer from gout, and the number is still increasing. Obesity and having an unhealthy lifestyle are believed to contribute to the prevalence of the condition.
Beer, which is a popular alcoholic beverage, is widely believed to trigger gout flares. It can raise the blood levels of purines, which results in the breakdown of uric acid.
Tuhina Neogi, MD , the Boston University School of Medicine’s professor and lead author of a new study, reveals that gout sufferers could not even sniff wine without experiencing a gout attack. This has led the research team to suspect that wine consumption could potentially trigger attacks.
Dr. Neogi conducted a survey to further investigate whether or not wine consumption could trigger attacks. The survey involved 724 gout sufferers who were overweight men in their 50’s and who suffered from at least one gout attack in the year before the survey.
It was found that consumption of a single serving of wine in did not increase the risk of gout attacks within a 24-hour period. However, drinking two drinks in one day has increased the risk of gout attacks by 36 percent. The risk increased by 50 percent for those who consumed two to four drinks. The researchers concluded that the risk increased with the wine consumption.
Individuals with diets that are rich in purine-rich foods such as pork, beef, or fish, or those who use diuretics were more at risk of the attacks. Dietary and lifestyle changes are highly recommended to reduce the risk. Consumption of anti-inflammatory food items is also recommended.
Turmeric, which is a medicinal spice, contains high levels of anti-inflammatory properties. It can be incorporated in the diet of those who want to reduce inflammation inside their body. Turmeric can also be conveniently consumed through curcumin supplementation. Curcumin is a phytochemical found in turmeric, and is believed to be highly therapeutic (amazon.com/Turmeric-Curcumin-Complex-BioPerine-Bio-availability/dp/B00JA4TLTI/).
