São José dos Campos, SP, Brazil; 28, May 2016: The 2016 Olympic Games authorities will pay a specific attention to prevent terrorism and other criminal activities during the Olympics and Paralympic Games in Brazil this year. The security authorities responsible for the Olympics have chosen a solution using aerostats to be the key technology for crime prevention in Rio this year. After an international procurement, four ALTAVE OMNI units were bought by the Brazilian Ministry of Justice. They will fly 200m above the ground in the four Olympic venues, permanently, watching everything that happens within a radius of several kilometers.
ALTAVE OMNI, a solution developed by Brazilian aerospace company ALTAVE, is the first wide area persistent surveillance aerostat solution ever developed for any civilian application worldwide.
With growing concerns about terror and criminal acts, especially during international events, the solution was acquired because it is unique and combines many characteristics to prevent, detect and quickly investigate suspicious activities during an event, such as:
-an intimidating effect of persistently floating aerostatat of 6m size and 200m high in the sky;
-captures imagery of more than 120 MPixel per frame (60 times a Full HD resolution or 15 times a 4K resolution!), 3 frames per second;
-an extraordinary capacity of real-time detection for multiple users- up to 6 users can watch different parts of the full captured image, as if they were independent Pan, Tilt & Zoom cameras;
-forensic investigation for multiple users- up to 2 users who can locate an event by time and GPS coordinates and track backwards and forwards to understand the fact;
-can cover an area of up to 40 km2, all the area all the time — even if the users are not seeing an event. For example, if he zooms in a specific area, all the area will be recorded for future access;
-up to 3 days continuous flight, after which a helium small replenishment is required;
-mobility to transport all the items in a trailer and change the launching site, and:
-low operational costs when compared to any other flying platforms.
Contract information & values
The total contract value granted to ALTAVE was around USD 8 MM and included all the items required for the 4 systems to operate, such as the aerostats, winch systems, tethers, trailers, optronics, imaging processing servers, energy supplies, software and training.
The project was developed under harsh requirements and deadlines, making a total of 6 months from signing to delivering 4 field-tested units, under schedule.
In 2nd June ALTAVE will finish the first phase of training to 80 people designated by the Brazilian Ministry of Justice for operating the equipment during the games.
About Eurosatory:
Eurosatory is a defence & security international exhibition held every two years in Paris. This year the exhibition will happen between 13 and 17 June. ALTAVE will be an exhibitor there for the first time, taking ALTAVE OMNI olympics solution for a “Premiere” in Europe.
ALTAVE’s booth is H6 — B171.
About ALTAVE
ALTAVE is the southern hemisphere leader in tethered air vehicles, especially aerostats and solutions for surveillance and communications based on them. Founded in 2011 by two aeronautical engineers, one with Masters in France (ISAE/Supaéro) and Thesis in NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory and the other with graduation work in Germany (TU Berlin), the team has a strong background from excellent engineering schools, including ITA (Aeronautical Institute of Technology), the school which started the aeronautical industry in Brazil, having EMBRAER as an outstanding result.
