If the medals won at Rio have encouraged you to get on your bike read on…..
16 August 2016 — The Rio Olympics are in full swing and among the many medals won by the USA so far, two have been in Cycling.
On day 5 of this year’s Olympic Games, Kristin Armstrong won her third consecutive Gold Olympic medal in the Women’s Time Trial in Cycling. Having previously won in both London and Beijing, Kristin has indicated that her ‘secret weapon’ is simply being a working mum. Kristin may not be a typical (just turned) 43-year-old lady, but she holds down a regular job and first and foremost is mum to her 5-year-old son. She has indicated that Rio’s medal has been the ‘most gratifying’ and is hoping that her performance shows women what just they could be capable of.
"For all the moms out there, I hope that this was a very inspiring day."
Adding to the medal tally is the silver won by the Women’s Team Track Pursuit — the team, led by Sarah Hammer consisted of Kelly Catlin, Chloe Dygert and Jennifer Valente — a team put together less than a year ago. Despite the fact that they were ‘going for gold’ they were happy to finish in silver position in a time of 4:12.454. This being the second silver for the U.S. team since the event debuted at the London 2012 Olympic Games.
‘So many women believe that cycling is a male dominated sport, therefore we are thrilled with the success that both Kristin Armstrong and Sarah Hammer’s team have achieved in Rio’s Olympic Games this summer.’ Says Tina of SmartChoice Fitness. ‘Cycling can be viewed as a ‘sport’ but it is also a very low impact way to exercise, great for women who believe that running or team games are not for them. Cycling is not only really good fun, but there are numerous health benefits and we have dedicated a section to this on our website.’
In light of the perception that cycling is dominated by men, Illinois Cycling Association is just one of many cycling associations in the US that are actively encouraging women to get on their bikes — the rest (confidence, ability and belief in yourself) will simply follow.
