Lebanon, PA; 18, August 2016: Gill Rock Drill Company Inc., a Pennsylvania-based full-service manufacturing and distributor organization primarily geared toward serving the drilling industry, announced it is now certified in underground drill repair, this week signaling the completion of MSHA Part 48 (underground) Training. Employees who took part in the training can now work in underground mines, whereas previously they were relegated to only work in surface (MSHA Part 46) mines.
In addition to enabling Gill Rock Drill to perform contract drilling for clients working in underground mines, this certification also allows the company to perform onsite service or repair to any of its customers’ drills or equipment that reside in an underground mine and its sales department to walk through potential clients’ underground mines to discuss how particular equipment could work for them. "Before this training, our personnel was not prepared for underground mine environments and could only operate within the confines of surface mines," explains Gill Rock Drill Company president Deborah Gill. "In addition to all the current services we offer, we can now apply those services to underground mines. Our employees in the areas of Drilling, Service and Sales completed the expert training, itself done by an MSHA-certified instructor."
According to both Gill Rock and MSHA officials, the MSHA Part 48 curriculum encompasses a 40-hour training procedure that includes topics such as statutory rights of miners and their representatives under the Act, plus authority and responsibility of supervisors; self-rescue and respiratory devices; entering and leaving the mine, plus transportation controls and communications systems; introduction to work environment; mine maps including escape paths, emergency evacuation routes and barricading; roof or ground control including ventilation, emergency evacuation and firefighting plans; health; cleanup including roof dusting; hazard recognition; electrical hazards; first aid; mine gases; health and safety aspects of the tasks to which a new miner will be assigned; hazard communication and emergency medical procedures.
In serving the drilling industry, Gill Rock Drill manufactures its own drilling machine, the Gill Beetle, a sturdy and straightforward drill customizable for any drilling application including construction drilling, rock quarry drilling and geothermal drilling. Further, the company provides large-capacity trailers and air compressors to make a complete drilling package, even providing all necessary drilling supplies and tools including drill steel, casing, adaptors, hammers and bits. A full-service machine and weld shop is also available for all manufacturing demands, from drilling apparatus to virtually any specially-designed product or tool.
