Orlando, FL — June 18, 2015 — Milk consumption has long been associated with a wide variety of health benefits for individuals who suffer from medical conditions associated with calcium deficiency. However, it seems the beverage is also beneficial for osteoarthritis patients.
A study suggests that milk consumption could potentially slow osteoarthritis, especially for women who suffer from knee osteoarthritis. However, this health benefit is only applicable to women and not men who drink milk.

A study used the Osteoarthritis Initiative data that involved 2,000 individuals with knee osteoarthritis. The subjects were surveyed and were made to recall their diet details, such as how frequently they drank milk in the past year and its amount. Through the information as well as the x-rays taken within two years, they were able to analyze the progress that the patients experienced. It was found that the joint space width of the participants decreased over time.
According to The Arthritis Foundation, milk consumption in the study was categorized in four groups. The first being none, the second was three or fewer glasses, and the third was four to six glasses every week. The fourth was seven or more glasses per week.
“At the end of two years, it was found that there was an average reduction of joint space width of 0.38, 0.29, 0.29 and 0.26 millimeters respectively in the various milk-consumption groups,” added O’Sullivan.
Researchers also found that there was a 0.12mm difference between those who drank the most and the least milk. There was also an estimated average decrease of 0.1 and 0.15 millimeters in individuals who suffered from knee osteoarthritis in a year. However, it is important to note that the positive effects of milk consumption only happened in women.
Patients should also take into account that excessive or high consumption of cheese was also found to make the condition of osteoarthritis patients worse. According to researchers, there is a chance that the high amounts of fat in cheese are responsible for the worsening of osteoarthritis.
Bing Lu, M.D., Brigham and Women’s Hospital’s assistant professor of medicine, stated that it has not yet been established why exactly milk helped. However, Richard F. Loeser, Jr., M.D., is University of North Carolina’s Thurston Arthritis Research Cente director of Basic and Translational Research; he suggested that the researchers made some adjustments for certain factors such as smoking, weight and physical activity to ensure that they weren’t the cause.
