Orlando, FL — May 14, 2015 — According to the study presented at the American College of Rheumatology’s 2012 annual meeting, there was a reduction in the number of joint replacements and hospital admissions between 1995 and 2010 in Ireland. Researchers believed the significant drop demonstrated the efficacy of drugs.
Aggressive rheumatoid arthritis treatment was supported by research. It was found that the wide use of TNF inhibitors significantly influenced the reduction in hospitalizations and joint replacements.
The study assessed the hospital records of almost 58,000 rheumatoid arthritis patients throughout Ireland. It revealed that there was a reduction in hospital stays by 13 percent and a reduction in musculoskeletal surgeries by 10 percent.
According to Oliver FitzGerald, M.D., study co-author and consultant rheumatologist at Dublin’s St. Vincent’s University Hospital, the strength of the study was due to the fact that the data was national, which included 57 public hospitals. He also added that the weak spot was that RA, in some cases, may have been miscoded as OA or osteoarthritis, and they also have excluded private hospitals.
The Journal of Rheumatology published a study that found RA patients in the past 15 years are less susceptible to the need of having joint surgery than individuals who were previously diagnosed. The researchers behind the study attributed it to the aggressive treatment with the traditional DMARDs, or Disease-modifying Antirheumatic drugs. DMARDs include methotrexate, which was introduced in the United States in the late 1990s.
Arnold Ceponis, M.D., PhD, University of California’s rheumatologist, stated that RA patients did much better in the last decade than before. This finding was supported by credible data from the national register-based study. He added that it seemed the TNF inhibitors were keeping RA sufferers out of medical institutions or hospitals. The decline in hospital stays was believed to be due to the positive effects on the cardiovascular system.
According to Dr. Ceponis, the finding of the study highlighted the importance of pharmaceutical advancement.
