London-based engagement ring designer Amanda Li Hope has recently become one of the first to join a newly launched initiative to promote bespoke engagement ring designers in the UK: the F&L Designer Guide for Engagement Rings.

The F&L Designer Guides aim to promote British designers and put them in contact with people who are interested in their work. The edition about engagement rings is the first in a series of Designer Guides that are yet to come.

Ethical Jewellery

Amanda Li Hope has always had a passion for ethical jewellery and still is very committed to working with ethically sourced materials. She was one of the world’s first jewellers to be certified to work with Fairtrade and sustainably mined gold, and therefore has a special claim to fame that makes her a one-of-a-kind designer.

The materials she uses for her engagement rings are guaranteed to be produced under safe conditions, with mining techniques that are environmentally friendly. Also, they are traded according to the global Fairtrade standards, meaning that the producers involved are being paid a fair price for their products, which allows them to take care of their families.

Setting Manipulation

Amanda Li Hope’s engagement rings highlight her fascination with setting manipulation, for her innovative designs are often personalised variations on traditional settings like the prong and the gypsy setting, and are at times hard to define by other jewellery design experts.

According to Amanda, the potential of the metal is equally important as the characteristics of the gemstones she uses in her rings. This way of thinking is what she personally calls ‘the hybrid’. The attention to the metals used may also be explained by her awareness of, and involvement in, the Fairtrade movement mentioned above.

Fundamental Shapes

Amanda’s constant wrestling with the rules of geometry results in engagement ring designs that feature fundamental shapes with a twist to them. Her work is said to have a strong contemporary flavour, which doesn’t undermine the obvious recognition of her rings as engagement pieces.

Mystical Gems

The gems used in Amanda’s creations are often quite obscure ones, which are believed to have mystical connotations. One of the gemstones that can be distinguished in her rings is the cognac diamond, whose subtle and nuanced glow manages to captivate many couples looking for the perfect token of their love.
