(Submit Articles) Whether you find yourself as a supervisor in a traditionally organized company, or a member of a self-managing team, you will sooner or later have to develop management skills. That may sound intimidating; but actually, it isn’t. The most effective management techniques are really just a matter of common sense. Judge for yourself as you read through the suggestions that follow.
Give clear directions. Directing others requires good communication skills. Good communication is necessary in every level of management. Even the best employees won’tbe productive if they don’tknow what they are expected to do.
As a supervisor, like in printing business that offers folder printing services for example, you need to give all the direction required for each job. Ask for feedback to determine whether your directions are fully understood especially on the colors and designs of the order for folders. Usually you will need to repeat some of your directions, perhaps using a different approach. Encourage your employees to ask questions about your directions. Train new employees well. All new employees need some on-the-job training and orientation. As a supervisor, you may train your new employees yourself or delegate the task. If you delegate the training to someone else, choose a person who knows the job well and is a good teacher. Then supervise the training. Make sure that all job duties are explained and that the new employees understand how to complete them.
Orienting new employees includes more than simply training them in their positions. New employees are often a little frightened at the prospect of a brand new workplace and co-workers; and perhaps new skills to learn as well. It is important to make new employees feel valued and welcome to familiarize them with the working environment. Studies have shown that properly oriented employees are more satisfied with their work, more productive, and more likely to stay in the job.
Be consistent. When you have decided that a job must be done in a certain way, make certain that it is always done that way by every employee. Don’tmake exceptions unless there is a good reason to do so.
Treat employees fairly. Employees will be more productive if you treat them fairly. Set reasonable standards of performance that your employees can achieve. And apply those standards to everyone. Don’tgive special privileges to a few favorites.
Be firm when necessary. Sometimes supervising others requires a firm hand. Never let an employee take unfair advantage of you, the company, or another employee. Learn to be firm without losing your temper.
Consider employees welfare. Whenever possible, do what is best for your employees. Of course, you cannot and should not do everything they ask of you. You should, however, consider their welfare and show your willingness to treat them fairly. Do whatever you can to help them without sacrificing the amount or quality of work done. If appropriate, talk with your immediate supervisor about changes that will benefit your employees.
Set a good example. Set a good example in everything you do on the job. Doing this one simple thing will make your supervisory job much easier.
