Orlando, FL — September 24, 2015 — Osteoarthritis is the most common form of arthritis. It is a painful condition that causes sufferers to endure physical limitations and a reduced quality of life. While pain relief drugs are typically used to fight osteoarthritis, there are other remedies for sufferers who want to use a natural means of improving their condition.
A clinical trial finds glucosamine helpful for pain reduction and improved function for osteoarthritis sufferers. Glucosamine is naturally produced by the body, and is one of the building blocks of the cartilage. The glucosamine levels inside the body decrease through aging, and this causes various undesirable consequences.
Cartilage damage doesn’t just take place due to aging, but also to overuse, which results in wear and tear in the joints. Overuse is often experienced by athletes and individuals who engage in intense physical activities on a regular basis.
“It is believed that through supplementation, the glucosamine loss inside the body is replenished,” said Divine Bounty spokesperson, Melissa Scott.
Glucosamine is believed to be essential not just in the growth, but also in the repair and maintenance of the cartilage. It is believed to help lubricate the joints and reduce the risk of cartilage breakdown. It is even believed to be as effective as NSAIDs for easing osteoarthritis symptoms.
In 2005, a review of 20 studies involving glucosamine was conducted. It was found that glucosamine has helped improve stiffness, joint pain, and function of individuals with osteoarthritis.
In the largest study conducted in 2006 involving glucosamine, called Glucosamine/chondroitin Arthritis Intervention Trial (GAIT), the researchers looked into 1,600 participants with knee osteoarthritis. In the first phase, it was found that the participants with moderate-to-severe arthritis who took a combination of glucosamine and chondroitin achieved significant relief from pain.
In the two-year-long 2010 phase of the study, it was revealed that the said combination also performed as effectively as a pain relief drug for knee osteoarthritis. In a small 2012 study, it was found that there was also an improvement in symptoms when glucosamine was combined with NSAIDs, and a significant improvement when glucosamine was used alone.
In a 2008 retrospective study, it was found that the number of individuals who used glucosamine and underwent knee replacement surgeries were fewer than the placebo group. Researchers suggest that glucosamine could potentially slow down joint damage.
Individuals who want to take advantage of the therapeutic benefits of the natural alternative may consume it through supplementation. The best glucosamine supplements available nowadays are those that contain MSM, which is also believed to promote joint health (http://www.amazon.com/Glucosamine-Sulfate-Supplement-2000mg-serving/dp/B0126ZF0B2).
