(World Press Release) Bochum, Germany, May 10th, 2011 ““ Packaging machines belong to the pacesetter for the use of Ethernet in the machinery industry. So 83% of the packaging machine-builders already used Ethernet exceeding the reference value of 80% in the total machinery industry in the year 2010.
However, the dynamic growth of Ethernet at packaging machines will be weakened in the future. Up to the year 2012 87% of the packaging machine-builders want to use Ethernet compared with 89% in the total machinery industry.
We now differentiate the use of Ethernet at the machines between real time Ethernet and exclusive use of TCP/IP. While 83% of the packaging machine-builders used Ethernet in 2010, 70% of them preferred real time Ethernet and 13% excluding TCP/IP at packaging machines. So packaging machines show a noticeably above average high portion on real time Ethernet. Compared with the total machinery industry the portion of using real time Ethernet are 52% and the exclusive usage of TCP/IP 28% in 2010.
To 2012 with 74% nearly three quarters of the packaging machine-builders will use real time Ethernet and with 67% over two thirds of the machine-builders in the total machinery industry. The use of excluding TCP/IP will remain at 13% with packaging machine-builders from 2010 to 2012 while TCP/IP will sink from 28% to 22% in the machinery industry to 2012.
So packaging machines are above all pacesetters for the use of real time Ethernet. Its use almost exploded in the years from 2008 to 2010 from 42% to 70% of the packaging machine-builders while the reference values for the total machinery industry increased less dynamically from 35% to 52%.
The Quest Trend Magazine combines this development of Ethernet at packaging machines with five issues packaging machine-builders have been dealing with since 2005. These five issues highlight requirements to Ethernet, critical referring to problems and reasons for not using Ethernet at packaging machines.
These five issues are assigned to statements of the packaging machine-builders. They are as quotations of the packaging machine-builders 1. “žAll devices we need must be Ethernet-capable“, 2. “žThe plurality of protocols is to criticize“, 3. “ž“¦ turning immediately to Ethernet, if the safety engineering were integrable“, 4. “žRJ45 plug problem!!! “ and 5. “žCurrently the use of Ethernet is not necessary“.

The publication in the Quest Trend Magazine is based on the new Quest study “žEthernet and Safety Ethernet 2010 – 2012, trends and innovations from the view of the machinery industry“ and also on two further Quest studies from the years 2008 and 2005 to Ethernet in the machinery industry. Highlights, table of contents and budget of the new Quest study to Ethernet is published on http://www.qtm.de/en/headlines.html.
