Orlando, FL — April 23, 2015 — People, especially in the United States, are most likely to experience lower back pain at least once in their lives. This is one of the common reasons why many individuals miss work or go to the doctor. However, there are measures that can be taken to by sufferers to prevent or diminish back pain episodes.
Experts suggest that patients should refrain from rushing into surgery for back pain. There are many prescription medications and procedures that are intended to reduce or prevent lower back pain. Unfortunately, however, only a few are effective.
Richard Chou, MD, is a primary care physician at Oregon Health and Science University and specializes in treating patients with lower back pain. Dr. Chou stated that, in the history of lower back pain management, we have witnessed one treatment after another being popularized as the next miracle cure. However, there is no miracle cure. When patients visit their doctors because they are in agonizing pain and are unable to move, healthcare professionals often send them to get an MRI scan to diagnose the problem.
“The problem is that, for many people, it is not the wear and tear on the spine that causes discomfort. A study revealed that one out of three adults over the age of 60 has had herniated or slipped disks but no back pain. This is likely the reason why individuals with lower back pain who get MRIs and have surgery still get the same results as those who don’t get scanned and don’t have surgery,” said VitaBreeze Supplements spokesperson Michelle O’Sullivan.
On its website, the Arthritis Foundation has provided the most common treatments or remedies for lower back pain. Included are physical activities such as resistance training, aerobic exercises and stretching. A study found that strengthening and stretching the body could significantly improve lower back pain.
However, it is also important to note that playing racquetball and other activities that require abrupt twisting or jerking motions can worsen back pain. It is also not advisable to do resistance training. For best results, patients need to spend two and a half hours on strength training, walking and aerobic exercise using a machine every week.
Experts also suggest that patients should get some bed rest. This means lying down to allow the muscles to rest until the pain diminishes. However, patients should not let their bed rest last for more than a few days as it can make pain worse.
In addition to increasing their activity levels, many people who suffer from lower back pain have chosen to add curcumin supplements to their daily routine. Curcumin is believed to contain potent anti-inflammatory properties that could be beneficial to those with lower back pain. Additionally, experts recommend supplements containing BioPerine to boost the absorption of the curcumin (http://www.amazon.com/Turmeric-Curcumin-Complex-BioPerine-Bio-availability/dp/B00JA4TLTI).
