September 17th, 2013: saw Fiumicino and Ciampino airport transfers temporarily take a back seat to goals and footballing thrills and spills as the two cities’ local clubs squared off in a pre-season friendly, creatively dubbed the ‘airport derby’.
In a game hosted on Ciampino’s home turf, the local team, led by coach Colantuoni, ended up achieving their first win of the pre-season, after a tie in the first preparation game against Romulea. To add to the score, the Ciampino eleven put in a committed performance, sustained by a brace from young striker Riccardo Guidi and a solid showing from newly-signed Albanian defensive midfielder Lukaj.
Against a direct contender for promotion, such as Fiumicino, these are overwhelmingly positive signs, which have delighted the Cittá di Ciampino president. Antonio Paolo Ceccecotto told the press after that the game that he had been very pleased with the performance and believed the team to be on the right track. The chairman took the time to praise rivals Fiumicino, whom he called an impressive team, but focused mostly on his own team’s intensity and commitment, deeming their performance impeccable. He also had kind words for new signing Lukaj, joining the many voices that sang the Albanian’s praises after the game.
When asked if any new signings were expected at Ciampino, the president replied that it could well be the case. Ceccecotto hinted at negotiations with an exciting new signing, claiming that he hoped it would be concluded before the closure of the summer transfer market. Further developments should unfold this upcoming week, with the new player hopefully being presented in the next few days.
Ciampino and Fiumicino both compete in the Promozione Championship, the seventh division of Italian football. This championship is played at a strictly amateur level and is comprised of a total of eight regional leagues, with each league’s winner progressing to the Eccellenza championship, the next level in Italian ‘calcio’ or football. Relegated teams from this division compete in the Prima Categoria, the Italian Eighth Division.
With the popularity in Italian football ever increasing Ciampino airport transfers will no doubt become even more convenient and popular than they currently are.
