21 July, 2014: Many people don’t think much about sunburn while riding in a car, but it can happen. Harmful UV rays are not blocked by car windows.
The Centers for Disease Control say just a few serious sunburns on a child raise his chances of skin cancer later in life. The same agency says children needs to be protected from UV rays any time they are outdoors.
“Unprotected skin can be damaged by the sun’s UV rays in as little as 15 minutes. Yet it can take up to 12 hours for skin to show the full effect of sun exposure. So, if your child’s skin looks “a little pink” today, it may be burned tomorrow morning. To prevent further burning, get your child out of the sun,” states the CDC article “How Can I Protect My Children from the Sun?”
All doctors say children need protection from the sun.
Some kind of a screen is needed to filter out the harmful UV rays. The Freddie and Sebbie Deluxe Car Sun Shade provides UPF 30+ protecting and also blocks the glare of sun and provides shade from the heat.
“You can get a sunburn riding down the road from the sun coming in a window,” said Neil Speight, spokesman for the Freddie and Sebbie line of children’s accessories. “Our new Deluxe Car Sun Shade will block the sun and help prevent your children from getting a sunburn.
The idea that car windows block harmful UV rays is a common misconception. The Skin Cancer Foundation has proof it doesn’t.
The website has an article called Sun Safety in Cars. The story reads in part: “A recent study in the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology revealed that nearly 53 percent of skin cancers in the US occur on the left, or drivers’ side of the body. If you’re one of the approximately 208 million licensed drivers in the US, take heed: ‘The increase in left-sided skin cancers may be from the UV (ultraviolet) exposure we get when driving a car,’ said Susan T. Butler, MD, coauthor of the study.”
The Foundation recommends people do something to their car windows to block harmful UV rays.
“Our removable sun screen accomplishes what the Skin Cancer Foundation recommends. Because our shades are removable and portable, you are not making a permanent change to your car and you can take them to any vehicle you child may ride in,” Mr. Speight said. “You can also reposition the shades at any time.”
The shades are sold in packs of two and come with suction cups for easy mounting and removal.
The Deluxe Car Sun Shade carries the Freddie and Sebbie lifetime replacement warranty. If it ever breaks or tears for whatever reason, send it back for a free replacement.
