The volume of Heraklion airport transfers beats out that of any other airport in Greece, a recent survey conducted by a local marketing company has shown.
According to this study, Crete — the island off the coast of Greece of which Heraklion is the capital — welcomes the highest number of visitors out of every region in the country; accordingly, the two airports located in the island, Heraklion and Chania, have a higher volume of airport transfers than any other facility of this type in Greece. Combined, the two airports registered an impressive 3.3 million visitors in 2013, a figure that represents roughly a quarter of the total number of visitors to Greece that year (12.7 million).
These numbers become even more impressive once they are compared to figures from 2012: overall, Greek airports registered an increase of over 10% in activity in relation to the previous year. Kalamata airport, in the south-west Pelloponese, was the record-breaker where individual facilities were concerned, with a growth of a staggering 62% in relation to its 2012 figures. Other airports that registered encouraging numbers included the aforementioned Heraklion and Chania, while the most popular destinations, aside from Crete, were Athens, Thessaloniki, and the islands of Mykonos, Santorini, Kefalonia, Kos, Zakynthos and Rhodes, which all registered double-digit growth.
Aviation was not, however, the only field where Greek tourism registered an excellent year; the country’s sea cruise businesses also thrived, registering a growth of roughly 11% in relation to 2012.
This data was collected and presented by Marketing Greece, a non-profit organization funded by the country’s government. These numbers are likely to be featured in the institution’s brand-new, state-of-the-art website, to be launched at the end of March. This portal, intended as a hub through which to promote Greek tourism, will include information on 110 Greek destinations, as well as over 2.000 photos and about 50 videos. Holiday types will also be divided by sector, to make navigation easier for visitors. The package will be completed with a weekly draw to award a random visitor a two-person trip to Greece.
