16, June 2015: Simon Wright, London-based designer of classic yet innovative jewellery, recently joined the renowned community of independent engagement ring designers F&L Designer Guides. Founders Frank Orman and Laura Bolick (F&L) said they were impressed by the work of Simon Wright, whose authentic craftsmanship comes through in his designs.
Wright’s unique collection of hand-crafted bespoke pieces includes a ring design inspired by Waterloo Bridge and one commissioned by a client who wanted part of his amputated leg bone worked into a ring. F&L founder Laura: “Simon’s flexibility and wide scope enable him to take on any vision. But that doesn’t prevent him from being equally skilled at creating traditional engagement ring masterpieces.”
Specialist in Antique Reproduction Pieces
Simon Wright is known to particularly enjoy working on antique reproduction pieces for couples who want to incorporate a family heirloom into a new commission or emulate the style of jewellery from a previous design period. Examples of this include an entirely new piece of jewellery that was made using gemstones from one of Wright’s clients’ mother’s necklaces, which allowed elements of the necklace’s history to be retained.
Simon Wright’s effortless combination of design flair and solid craftsmanship may stem from studying under the guidance of big names amongst Australian jewellers and artists such as Mark Edgoose, Rhys James and Miyuki Nakahara, who not only developed Wright’s appreciation for jewellery as an art form but also instilled the fundamentals of design.
The sleek and clean lines of Wright’s work can be attributed to his tendency to use platinum as a medium. Platinum generally does not only highlight the gemstone, but also provides a dazzling aesthetic that only this precious metal can achieve.
Involving Clients in the Creation Process
Couples who have chosen Simon Wright to design their commissioned bespoke ring say they had an enjoyable experience from beginning to end. The jeweller’s clients can be involved in the making of their engagement ring as much as they want — the projects are invariably very collaborative. Wright has even put together a Perfect Proposal package which helps solve the dilemma faced by many of a ring being needed for a surprise proposal but not wanting to risk commissioning a design without their fiancée’s collaboration.
