Orlando, FL— June 10, 2015 — Diabetes has long been affecting the lives of millions of people from around the world. It causes several problems, especially among patients who are unable to manage their weight. The good news is that there seems to be a natural remedy that is believed to be beneficial for sufferers.

New research revealed that fish oil may potentially reduce diabetes risk, specifically type 2 diabetes. Fish oil has been widely used as an effective natural remedy for a wide variety of ailments. Its popularity is demonstrated by the presence of the increasing number of fish oil supplements available in the market nowadays.

According to researchers from Harvard University, the omega-3 fatty acids in fish oil can potentially increase the levels of a hormone known as adiponectin, which is associated with insulin sensitivity. The presence of the higher levels of adiponectin in the bloodstream has also been linked to a reduced risk for heart disease.

Jason Wu, study lead author from the Harvard School of Public Health, states that it has not been established yet whether fish oil can increase the circulation of adiponectin in humans, in the same way as it does for animals, based on animal-based studies.

The study involves a meta-analysis of 14 clinical trials and reviews existing research and tries to determine a consistent pattern. The researcher randomized the studies that were on review and made them placebo-controlled trials. According to Wu, they found that fish oil indeed caused modest increases in the level of adiponectin present in the blood of humans.

The new study  focused on the 682 individuals who took fish oil supplements, and another group of 641 participants in the placebo group who took olive oil or sunflower oil. Those who took fish oil experienced an increase of 0.37 micrograms per milliliter of blood. This hormone is essential in the processes that affect metabolism, such as inflammation and blood sugar regulation.

The effects of fish oil may also vary, and it can have an effect stronger in certain groups of people. However, researchers concluded that more studies are needed to determine the group of people that would benefit from fish oil supplements the most.

Fish oil is very popular nowadays, and as a matter of fact, there are 31 percent of children and 37 percent of adults in the United States who are taking fish oil supplements. This is according to the survey conducted by the National Institutes of Health’s National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine in 2007 (http://www.amazon.com/Omega-Fish-Oil-Supplement-Softgels/dp/B00O8NS20K/).
