Orlando, FL — April 23, 2015 — Having an arthritic condition can be very painful and negatively life-changing. There are actually varying causes of arthritis, and healthcare professionals are recommending some measures such as eating a healthy diet for people to reduce their risk for the condition. However, it seems that lifestyle factors can also significantly influence the development of arthritic conditions such as osteoarthritis.
“There are five common lifestyle factors that could be linked to the development of osteoarthritis. They are: texting and playing video games from a young age, diet, wearing high-heeled shoes and engaging in high-impact exercises,” explained VitaBreeze Supplements spokesperson, Michelle O’Sullivan.
Dr. Yusuf Yazici, from NYU Hospital for Joint Diseases, believes that those who have been fond of constantly texting from a young age are at a high risk for osteoarthritis. In a study that involved 257 children, ages 9 to 15, girls who used cell phones more often than boys reported pain. The pain was linked to the number of messages sent, the use of abbreviations and the keyboard type.
According to Dr. Yazici, the problem is that many devices are not designed for children, whose tendons and bones are still developing. Joint injuries could trigger the development of osteoarthritis. Yazici presented the study at the annual congress of the European League Against Rheumatism in 2011. Boys who play video games frequently are more prone to osteoarthritis for the same reasons.
The University of Iowa’s Kinesiology department’s researchers conducted a study that involved 15 women who walked in flats, 2-inch heels and 3.5-inch heeled shoes. It was found that the height of the heels significantly influenced walking characteristics such as stride length and speed. Due to increased compression in the medial compartment of the knee, constantly wearing high heels for an extended period of time could potentially increase the risk for individuals to develop knee osteoarthritis. High impact exercise was also considered a factor that could increase a person’s risk for osteoarthritis.
“Although many women prefer to wear high-heeled shoes, studies suggest that women should only wear them on special occasions,” added O’Sullivan.
While no foods have been directly linked to osteoarthritis, some research also suggests that diets rich in some nutrients could help decrease osteoarthritis risk or at least its progression. In the Framingham study in 1996, it was found that individuals who took the highest levels of vitamin E were 30% less likely to experience knee osteoarthritis progression.
Many arthritis sufferers also believe that consuming glucosamine supplements has helped them to manage their joint pain. Several studies suggest that supplementing glucosamine may have the ability to slow the progression of mild to severe osteoarthritis in the knees (http://www.amazon.com/Glucosamine-Sulfate-Chondroitin-Supplement-Turmeric/dp/B00DUMO9X4).
