Sheffield: Pentagon Vauxhall in Sheffield have made it their mission this year to bring the joy of electric driving to more people than ever, so news that they’vereduced the revolutionary Vauxhall Ampera extended-range electric vehicle to just £22995 – inclusive of the Government’s £5,000 grant — is sure to win overcost-conscious drivers looking to save money on their everyday motoring.
The Ampera Positiv features a raft of great standard features like DAB radio, Bluetooth, leather interior, a 7-inch touch-screen control monitor, climate control, cruise control, alloy wheels and Vauxhall’s 100,000 mile ‘lifetime’ warranty.
But where the Ampera really delivers is under the bonnet. It gives drivers all the benefits of electric driving, without any of the range anxiety associated with pure electric vehicles.
The Vauxhall Ampera is not a hybrid. Electricity powers the wheels of the Ampera at all times, with a lithium-ion battery pack feeding an advanced 150 BHP electric drive unit. The battery quietly delivers up to 50 miles of electric driving (and zero tailpipe emissions), after which a small range-extending generator, powered by a petrol engine, kicks in to provide an additional 300-plus mile range.
According to figures produced during the official European Test Cycle the Vauxhall Ampera will achieve a massive 235.4 miles per gallon (mpg) and tailpipe emissions of just 27g/km.
Danny Whitehead, General Manager at Pentagon Vauxhall in Sheffield says: ‘I’ve loved driving the Vauxhall Ampera and I know from personal experience that the savings for an average driver can be truly staggering. Most commuters I know don’t travel more than 50 miles a day to work and back. A 50 mile journey in the Ampera would only cost around £1.50 in electricity.’
He continued: ‘We’ve seen figures that show that someone currently driving a 35mpg petrol car 80 miles every working day (around 20,000 miles a year) would save around £3,000 a year in petrol by switching to an Vauxhall Ampera. That’s a huge saving.’
The Ampera — voted European Car of the Year in 2012 — is also exempt from road tax. When the car was originally launched Vauxhall were charging customers in excess of £30,000 for the car, but with the latest reduction by Pentagon drivers can get behind the wheel of one from just £22,995.
Danny added: ‘I think in 10 to 15 years electric cars will become the norm. The technology is moving rapidly, but with the new Ampera you get all the benefits of electric driving today without the ‘range anxiety’ that comes with other vehicles on the market.’
