Orlando, FL— December 31, 2015 — Psoriatic arthritis is an autoimmune, inflammatory skin disease that causes red, scaly rashes. It is affecting the lives of many people nowadays, and reduces their quality of life. Unfortunately, individuals who suffer from it are still not getting the right medical attention they are looking for.
Psoriatic arthritis sufferers are believed to be unsatisfied with treatments. According to research, nearly 30 percent of individuals with psoriasis are more likely to develop psoriatic arthritis. This condition doesn’t just cause pain and swelling, but also results in joint damage. There are widely used remedies for psoriatic arthritis such as oral pharmaceutical drugs, topical creams, and phototherapy.
In a study published in JAMA Dermatology, it was found that about half of the population suffering from psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis are unsatisfied with the treatments they are getting. It was also found that many of them are either undertreated or not even getting any treatment at all.
According to April W. Armstong, M.D., assistant clinical professor of dermatology as well as director of the Clinical Research Unit at the University of California, dissatisfaction towards the treatments is more common in individuals with psoriatic arthritis. What makes it even worse is that they suffer from a noticeable and irreversible symptom such as joint destruction.
In a study conducted by the National Psoriasis Foundation involving 5,604 individuals with psoriasis or psoriatic arthritis, it was found that 23 to 49 percent of the subjects who suffered from mild to moderate psoriasis claimed they were untreated. There were also 9 to 30 percent of subjects with severe psoriasis reported they were untreated.
Many sufferers use topical treatments due to the scare of side effects associated with the use of pharmaceutical drugs. There are those who also believed that medications were unnecessary because their condition is not severe enough, or that their doctor won’t prescribe other treatments. There are also sufferers who rely on a natural alternative called turmeric to ease the flare-ups caused by psoriasis and psoriatic flare-ups.
According to the National Psoriasis Foundation, turmeric’s anti-inflammatory properties are a popular topic of studies. Turmeric can be added in dishes or beverages, but it can also be consumed through supplementation.
There are curcumin supplements available nowadays for individuals who suffer from the condition. Curcumin is a phytochemical found in turmeric, and is believed to have antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant properties. Experts recommend that sufferers should seek the advice of their doctor or naturopathic practitioner for the right turmeric dosage (amazon.com/Turmeric-Curcumin-Complex-BioPerine-Bio-availability/dp/B00JA4TLTI).
