Together, the World Heritage Site listed forts reflect the elaborate, fortified seats of power of Rajput princely states that flourished between the 8th and 18th centuries and their relative political independence. Natural High is the first tour operator to take adventurous travellers to all six of Rajasthan’s famous hill forts in a single trip.
The new two-week tour is the first to include both the iconic and the forgotten World Heritage forts at Amber, Chittorgarh, Gagron, Jaisalmer, Kumbhalgarh and Ranthambhore. Travelling via the cities of Jaipur and Udaipur, the trip also takes you far away from the crowds and off the beaten track to enjoy some of the best of rural Rajasthan.
Andrea Hulme of Natural High said, “I’m delighted that UNESCO has recognised the hill forts’ importance, giving them the same status as other exceptional sites around the world such as the Taj Mahal, Machu Picchu and The Great Wall of China.
“If you thought you already knew Rajasthan then youÃre in for a treat. Although half of the forts are fairly well known, the others are hidden deep in the countryside. Rajasthan abounds with impressive forts and palaces from the world renowned to the barely remembered. To us, it’s the mixture of both that’s intriguing.”
There is a huge amount of variety among the forts to keep explorers interested and the sprawling sites beg for exploration that could keep you busy for months, let alone days. Photographers will never run out of breathtaking pictures on this trip.
-Spectacular Amber is already a major attraction for visitors to Jaipur.
-The fort ruins at Ranthambhore make a scenic backdrop to safaris in the national park below it.
-Remote Gagron is really unusual and hugely photogenic as it Ãs surrounded on three sides by water.
-The stories of self sacrifice instead of facing defeat at Chittorgarh are enough to make your hair stand on end.
-The fort at Kumbalgarh is simply enormous and the perimeter walls snake for 352km (22 miles) over the Aravali Hills.
-Jaisalmer in the deserts of western Rajasthan is India’s last living fort and has been continually inhabited for more than 850 years.
Andrea adds, “Along the way we highly recommend staying in some of the region’s other forts and palaces that have been converted into fabulous, sometimes quirky, heritage hotels. They have heaps of character and atmosphere and really add to the experience.”
