The recent National Topical Stamp Show, the 67th Annual national show held by the American Topical Association, was held over the course of three days from Friday to Sunday at the Crowne Plaza Milwaukee Airport. The show was designated as a part of the World Series of Philately, a series of events that are accredited by the American Philatelic Society as being the most significant, reputable and sizeable stamp collecting shows throughout the year. According to the show’s official website, it featured an “all-thematic philatelic exhibition and a 30-dealer bourse” and additionally displayed “a wide range of other stamps, covers and philatelic material. “Beyond stamp sales, the recent stamp collecting show also included “meetings, seminars, activities and special touring events.”
On Friday, the topical theme was Nature; that day’s stamp sales and collection displays all involved the theme of nature. Many stamps displayed Friday featured images of plants, animals and natural landscapes. As the weekend-long show progressed into Saturday, the theme shifted to Culture; stamps depicting pictures and objects with a cultural theme were shown on the show’s second day. On Sunday, the show concluded with a final theme of Technology. Stamp collections were displayed and sold on the show’s final day that depicted the inventions of years gone by such as cars, trains and early telephones, as well as more modern stamps depicting inventions like computers and cell phones.
Founded in 1949, the American Topical Association (ATA) has grown to become the largest philatelic society that is specifically involved with collecting stamps that fall under a certain topic or theme.
