Orlando, FL — July 13, 2015 — Having arthritis is a burden in many ways. It hinders people from performing their daily routines or working, and makes them pay for medical expenses. Surgeries are considered to be one of the treatment options that is known to increase the quality of life of patients, and they seem to be working quite well so far.
Researchers find knee surgery beneficial among low-income patients. According to research, patients who make less than $35,000 per year and had knee replacements were very satisfied with the results. They reported less pain and improvement in function than those with higher salaries. This is according to the findings of the new research presented in the annual meeting of the American College of Rheumatology.
“This, according to the researchers, is unexpected because low income earners are usually exposed to a reduced access to care as well as comorbidities that can potentially complicate treatment, ” said VitaBreeze Supplements spokesperson, Michelle O’Sullivan.
Jasvinder Singh, M.D., University of Alabama’s associate professor of medicine, stated that lower income and socioeconomic status are linked to worse health outcomes. It was surprising to learn that the patients experienced improvements after joint replacement.
In the Mayo Clinic Total Joint Registry data, which was analyzed by the researchers, it was found that patients who belonged to the lowest income categories were less likely to experience moderate to severe pain after the knee replacement surgery. These patients were making annual salaries of $45,000 and below, and they did well compared to individuals who made more than $45,000 every year.
According to Dr. Singh, there is a possible reason why low-income patients appear to benefit from the surgery more. These patients do not usually have the money to have the surgery anytime they want, and they tend to wait longer to get it. Waiting often results in more limited function and it also worsens the knee pain. When they finally have the means to get the surgery, the improvement is often more noticeable than those who get the procedure earlier.
The professor of medicine and immunology at Duke University School of Medicine, David Pisetsky, stated that the study is interesting because it provides healthcare professionals with an additional piece of information, which can help them understand the outcomes or results of the surgery.
There are many treatment options available nowadays that are very helpful to arthritis sufferers. There are also patients who use natural alternatives such as glucosamine supplements. Many of the sufferers who use glucosamine believe that they have experienced significant pain relief and improved mobility because of the natural alternative (http://www.amazon.com/Glucosamine-Sulfate-Chondroitin-Supplement-Turmeric/product-reviews/B00DUMO9X4/ ).
