01 August, 2014:According to a news item published on the website of Derbyshire newspaper the Burton Mail, a group of pupils from Repton School are preparing to embark on a school tour to Ghana, for the purposes of carrying out volunteer work.
This school tour, which will be the third in as many years for these schoolchildren, was made possible by a partnership struck between Repton School, which the pupils in question attend, and Dreamland, the evocatively-named school in Ghana set to welcome them later this summer. This alliance, which has already spawned two student exchanges in the past two year, is seen as beneficial to both parties: the Burton school can give its pupils some valuable volunteering and international travel experience, while the Ghanaian institution can use this opportunity to further their objective of becoming the best primary and junior school in the country.
During their school tour to the African country, the students, who number eight in total, will be carrying out work in the library, teaching English and organizing a sports day for the local children, according to the write-up in question. The article adds that plans are in place to have the British students source twenty bikes to offer to their Ghanaian counterparts, some of whom have to trek as much as four miles to attend school every day.
According to the article, a textbook loan system and a visit to a local waterfall will also be funded with money from the visiting school. Both schemes were agreed to at Easter, during a visit to Ghana by Repton School staff representatives that further yielded an agreement for a teacher from the African school to undertake summer teacher training in England.
In order to raise money for this school tour, the Burton pupils have carried out a number of initiatives, including a car wash, tennis, cricket and ‘rounders’ tournaments, pyjama sales, gardening, cleaning and a ‘breakfast in bed’ initiative.
