1. Use a dip irrigation system, a modernized version of the old soaker hose. This hose-with-holes system can be laid alongside plant roots, releasing water to the prime source, the root system. Gardeners can purchase easy to assemble kits at many garden centers.
Also, they can also conserve energy, as this system typically saves 30-50% of the water you would normally use. Also, they have built-in sensors that can “sense” rain and turn them on & off.
2. Use a soaker hose, which is a rubbery hose constructed from used automobile tires. It is placed 3-4 inches from the plants and may be covered with mulch to help roots hold water.
Hose couplers are also available, allowing you to connect two soakers to the same water faucet. Soaker hoses are less expensive, but more labor intensive, unless you invest in a separate timer.
