Orlando, FL— August 6, 2015 — Knee and hip replacement surgeries are among the procedures people usually resort to as a measure to eliminate pain and improve their mobility. While many arthritis sufferers who have not yet undergone surgery are finding remedies to improve their overall condition, arthritis seems to convince more sufferers to resort to a procedure.
A study reveals that millions of Americans are living with hip and knee implants. According to the researchers, there are over 7 million individuals in the United States who are living with artificial knees or hips. This means there were 4.7 million knee replacements and 2.5 million hip replacements.
An American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons annual conference was conducted, and it was where the Mayo Clinic researchers presented their findings. According to the researchers, the study features the importance for the health care system to prepare for the lifelong care individuals with artificial knees or hips are going to need as they age.
Previous studies also revealed that about 1 million new total hip and knee replacements are performed in the United States per year. Unfortunately, this number is expected to rise and until now, there has still been very little information about the total number of individuals that are living with a prosthetic device.
Daniel Berry, M.D., professor of orthopaedics at Mayo Clinic, believes that the numbers demonstrate there are roughly 1.5 times as many individuals who have had a joint replacement surgery in the United States as there are those who have had heart failure. He also added that the estimates can be placed within the same ballpark as coronary heart disease, but much higher than stroke.
According to the director of the Thurston Arthritis research Center at the University of North Carolina, Joanne M. Jordan, many individuals with implants which resulted from osteoarthritis, also suffer from chronic conditions. She also added that osteoarthritis is the most common cause of the need for joint replacement surgeries. While hip and knee replacements often last a long time, they sometimes wear out and when they do, it leads to another problem such as infection or dislocation of the implant. When this happens, a second surgery called a revision is then needed.
Nowadays, people (especially those who are suffering from certain conditions such as arthritis) are resorting to various measures just to reduce pain, improve their overall condition and reduce their chance of needing a surgery. There are those who use natural alternatives such as curcumin supplements, which are believed to be very helpful to arthritis sufferers. Curcumin is an active ingredient of the ancient, medicinal spice known as turmeric (http://www.amazon.com/Turmeric-Curcumin-Complex-BioPerine-Bio-availability/dp/B00JA4TLTI).
