25, September 2014: Tuscany is one of the most popular destinations for tourists in Europe, attracting people throughout the year. Travel experts confirm that villas in Tuscany are always much sought-after, and people choose the region for the beautiful countryside, medieval villages and the impressive cities, including Florence.
However, aside from the charms of the region that are available to enjoy throughout the year, there are also a number of festivals that take place on an annual basis. Italian travel specialists say these events provide something new and interesting for visitors, offering an insight into the unique cultural traditions of the region.
Travel companies have advised details of a number of festivals coming up throughout the autumn in Tuscany, which may be of interest to those booking villas in Tuscany. Here are three that are taking place shortly.
1. The Mushroom and Chestnut Festival, Vivo d’Orcia
Vivo d’Orcia is a small village in Tuscany, and every October it hosts the Mushroom and Chestnut Festival. Known locally as the ‘Sagra del Fungo e della Castagna’, it features competitions, fun and games for the whole family. Visitors can go on a nature walk to discover more about porcini mushrooms, which are used in a wide variety of dishes, and chestnuts and mushrooms are also on sale in various forms.
2. The Feast of the Thrush, Montalcino
Known as ‘Sagra del Tordo’, this festival takes place in and around the 14th century castle in Montalcino on the last weekend in October every year. It features costumes, parades, music, drums and more, and the feast itself culminates the event on the Sunday. There is plenty of food and local wine throughout the day, but visitors are advised to book their place in advance as numbers are limited. There is also a popular longbow tournament — again, tickets are required for this.
3. The Truffle Festival, San Giovanni d’Asso
This fair takes place in November at the Truffle Museum in San Giovanni d’Asso, and will be of great interest to visitors staying in nearby villas in Tuscany. The area around here is famous for its black and white truffles, with the truffle season lasting from September to December. The festival takes place during the second and third week of November, during which visitors can sample white truffles and items of food that use truffles within them.
