10 January, 2014: Bridal dresses worn by celebrities and designed by famous wedding dress designers are the focal point of an exhibit opened in May at the Victoria & Albert museum, in London.
The display, which started on May 3rd and will continue until March of next year, will feature about 80 dresses designed between 1775 and 2014. This means that the focus is not solel on modern-day celebrity dresses and wedding dress designers, but has been expanded to encompass historic representatives of the genre from the past four centuries.
The objective of this exhibition, curated by Edwina Ehrman, is to trace the evolution of not only bridal fashion, but the ritual of the wedding itself, through the ages, from the days when it was a simple family affair to the modern age of blow-out ceremonies and celebrity wedding dress designers.
For this purpose, the curator has raided the Victoria & Albert’s archives for a selection of the best examples of wedding dresses contained therein. The final sample of 80 dresses ended up being quite historically representative, with the gowns included ranging from a silk satin court dress as one of the earliest examples of bridal wear, to dresses made from parachute silk and furnishing fabrics during World War II.
The selection, however, is not limited to historic dresses, and visitors to the exhibit will also be able to admire gowns concocted by well-known contemporary wedding dress designers such as Vera Wang, Christian Lacroix, Vivienne Westwood and the ‘father’ of wedding dress design, Charles Worth. Also on display are gowns worn by celebrities such as Dita Von Teese, the Duchess of Cambridge and pop singer Gwen Stefani.
In addition to the wedding gowns, the exhibition also displays other wedding-related items, such as jewellery and groom-wear, aiming to paint a full picture of the evolution of wedding ceremonies throughout the centuries.
