Business news portal The International has recently published an article on their website offering a few suggestions of spots tourists should aim to visit when on barge holidays in France.

The article focused on one route in particular, the one linking Paris to Normandy, which is thought to be one of the most popular among tourists who book barge holidays in France. The north of the country holds some of its most scenic landscapes and quaintest attractions, so it comes as no surprise that this should have been the itinerary chosen by the staff writers in charge of this piece.

The article began by highlighting some of the views tourists could enjoy in Paris itself, before leaving on their barge cruise. This section touched on all the mandatory sights – from the Notre Dame de Paris cathedral, with its majestic spires and gargoyles, to the Musee du Louvre, where visitors should endeavour to at least catch a glimpse the Mona Lisa. However, side by side with these commonplace touristic activities, the site also recommended a walk by the banks of the Seine at sundown as a cheap and cheerful way to indulge in a romantic experience.

The next section of the write-up deals with sights visitors taking barge holidays in France should not miss once they are actually on board the vessel that will take them on their river cruise up to Normandy. Recommended stops along this route include the towns of Bayeux (known for its tapestries and deeply entrenched in the history of that part of the country), Auvers-sur-Oise (where Dutch painter Vincent Van Gogh spent the last few months of his life), or Giverny, a mandatory stop for art enthusiasts. This leg of the journey also features a number of D-Day memorial sites, which will no doubt interest history buffs, especially those who take an interest in the World Wars. The final stop should be the Norman capital, Rouen, where tourists can indulge in a wine-tasting tour, explore the town’s history or simply relax at the beach.

France is currently one of the most popular destinations for tourists looking to take European river cruises, alongside countries such as Italy and Germany.
