17, December 2014: There is a great deal of international excitement and buzz regarding the upcoming Festival of Sant’Agata, to be held in Sicily, in 2015. This highly important religious festival will commence on the 3rd of February and honour the enduring legacy of the Sicilian patron saint. Visitors are expected to take the opportunity to stay in the many luxury villas in Sicily and pay their respects at the local places of worship.
The festival will begin with a candlelit procession along the historic Sicilian streets. Locals and tourists will gather to enjoy tunes played by one of the popular Italian marching bands and no doubt cheers will be heard from far and wide as the faithful rejoice in the legacy of Sant’Agata. The evening will be rounded off with a magnificent fireworks display.
On the second day of the festival those staying in any of the lovely local villas in Sicily will be able to wake early and join the worshippers for a dawn service at the cathedral. The elaborate statue of Sant’Agata will be carried along the cobbled streets and on to one of the most famous Sicilian churches where an elaborate cross, donated by the Italian composer Vincenzo Bellini, is on show.
Historic stories regarding the persecution of the saint will be recounted during religious events in Porta Uzeda and Duzmet, and there is usually a great deal of quiet contemplation and reflection for those who hold the Christian faith. However, crowds are guaranteed a host of more upbeat entertainment during the three-day festival as well. Market stalls will sell an assortment of traditional sweets and souvenirs, important religious artworks will be on show in the local galleries, and there will be a range of performances at local music venues.
In the highlight of the festival, the statue of Sant’Agata will be carried through Etnea to the Church of al Borgo on the 5th of February. Attendees are advised to wrap up warm in preparation to watch a spectacular fireworks display, set against the backdrop of the moonlit city vista.
Those planning to visit the island at this busy and important time are advised to book in to their chosen villas in Sicily early as accommodation is already selling fast.
